Top Professional Athletes That Use CBD

What goes up must come down. When performing at the top of your game, pushing your limits can really take its toll on the human body. Many of us are fortunate to be able to spend the necessary recovery time coming down after flying as close to the sun as we possibly can. For some that is not always an option. Professional athletes, for instance, may need to perform at their highest level day after day, particularly during playoff season or in any other form of competitive tournament. Some athletes have chosen to use legal forms of cannabidiol, such as pure CBD oil, to aid in their recovery and get themselves back into the action.

Megan Rapinoe Loves CBD

Many of us remember how essential Megan Rapinoe was to the US women’s team’s triumph during the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup. Megan herself believes that CBD is essential to her physical recovery. “I wanted a healthier, more natural option for pain management, sleep aid, relaxation while flying, and general recovery,” Megan stated, referring to her use of CBD.1

Her sister, Rachel, said “As a tool, CBD has been integral in Megan's training and recovery program for the past few years. She's seen the massive potential for more people to adopt CBD into their recovery regimens.” Rachel Rapinoe formerly played soccer professionally as well, and she believes so much in the healing properties of CBD that she has formed her own CBD products company.1

Rob Gronkowski Uses a Topical With CBD

When Gronk wasn’t busy winning Super Bowls, he once injured his foot playing pickup soccer. That was when he first attempted using a topical cream with CBD for pain. “I throw the [CBD] cream on and, boom, it temporarily relieved the pain. I got to go through the rest of my day, put the shoes back on — because if you’ve got stubbed toes and put your shoe on, you’re going to start walking a different way… I knew right then and there, I was like, ‘Dang, this stuff works.’ [And] I was looking for something like that to help me relieve the pain that I’m in from doing activities and sports.”2

Nate Diaz Fights the Good Fight for CBD Oil

In August 2016, Nate Diaz lost a battle to Conor McGregor, but then helped win the war for CBD usage by professional athletes. During a post-fight press conference, Diaz puffed a vape pen that he admitted to contain CBD. At the time, CBD was on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) prohibited list, and his actions put the debate for its prohibition back on the table. CBD is no longer outlawed by WADA, and this rule change has been dubbed “The Nate Diaz Rule.”3

Lucas Glover Touts CBD

While not as intense as an MMA fight, golfing can still wear athletes out. Professional golfer Lucas Glover has taken to a daily regimen of CBD products. “More and more guys are asking about it [CBD]. We’re not a contact sport per se, but our schedule can be grueling. For golfers, the biggest benefit is calmness and sleep,” Glover said about other golfers taking an interest in his CBD use. Although for Glover, it’s not just something he uses strictly for golf. “It’s helping me, and not just on the golf course,” he said. “It’s helping with my overall life and health.”4
